Arlene Samen has been a Maternal Fetal Medicine nurse practitioner for over 35 years. In 2004, she left behind her university career to dedicate her life to serving pregnant women living in the most remote areas of the world. She started One Heart World Wide, a 501(c)3 organization providing skilled birthing centers to the most remote regions in Tibet and Nepal. She lived and worked in Tibet for over 10 years at the request of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to start the first safe motherhood program in Tibet. Arlene was selected as one of the 50 Unsung Heroes for Acts of Compassion in 2001, and was named a CNN Hero of the Week in 2008.
